An Archive of Ideas

I work with drawing and text. My works have appropriated texts that describe scientific discovery, historic quests and the fictions of Borges. For the past few years my work has explored the imaginative space of the book in a series of pencil-drawn copies of texts and pictorial details. My current research makes links between specific techniques of restoration and images derived from new technologies. I have received awards from The Wellcome Trust, Arts Council England and Arts and Humanities Research Council and exhibited extensively. Recent shows include Nothing is Forever at South London Gallery and Ulysse(s): L’autre mer, at the Fonds Régionale d’Art Contemporain (FRAC), Rennes, France. I am Course Leader for the MA Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.

I make work that explores the relationship between individual and group, or object and subject in particular contexts. I am particularly interested in the ways that social life is embedded in, and formed by the material world. Works are diverse in form ranging from large scale projects involving the actions of many people, to singular objects. Current projects include making an alphabet for Texan Holey Rock, with Secondary Modern design, and a remaking of the Inlaid Table at Lady Lever Gallery, Portsunlight. Commissioners have included Grizedale Arts, New Art Gallery Walsall and Static, Liverpool.  I am currently a Cocheme Fellow at AIR, Central St Martins. I am Postgraduate Research Tutor for Art and Design at Sheffield Hallam University.
